I am a huge fan of Beowulf and his heoristic philosophy. However, I believe that it is not possible to understand each Beowulf's motivations without having a grasp on the motivations of Grendel. I do recomend reading Grendel published in 1971, which is a retelling of the classic story from the "villians" perspective!!
