the right to think for ourselves

A helpful reminder, as we head into the long July 4 250th birthday holiday, of things worthy of rockets' red glare. The public library and its symbolism, for one.

“…The library was not and is not perfect. Our public library system has been segregated and elitist. At various points in history, public libraries have reinforced white superiority, excluded sexual minorities and elevated men as knowledge’s gatekeepers. And only rarely does it receive consistent, secure funding to fill its many societal roles.

But however imperfect, wherever a public library exists, it is one of the few places where Americans can experience the public life that neoliberalism has defunded and partisanship has demonized. When you walk into one, you know that there are some things too precious to be trusted to corporations or consumer preferences or political influence. A library card is liberal democracy made manifest.

There is a reason that culture warriors hate the library. It is the same reason that Americans should defend it with our lives. No political spin doctor can sell us what is freely given at one: the right to think for ourselves.” Tressie McMillan Cottom
