Wm James Lecture, Harvard Divinity School Feb. 2, 2023: John Kaag

As part of Harvard Divinity School's annual William James Lectures on Religious Experience, Professor John Kaag will present "William James and the Sick Soul." The lecture will discuss William James's 1895 lecture entitled "Is Life Worth Living?" It was no theoretical question for James, who had contemplated suicide during an existential crisis as a young man a quarter-century earlier. This lecture shows why the founder of pragmatism and empirical psychology can still speak so directly and profoundly to anyone struggling to make a life worth living.

John Kaag is Donahue Professor of the Arts at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He has written extensively on American philosophy, from Jonathan Edwards to the present. His most recent books are Sick Souls, Healthy Minds: How William James Can Save Your Life and Be Not Afraid of Life: In the Words of William James.
